  • Graziano De Rossi

    Graphic designer / Calligrapher /

The year 1986 marks the beginning of Graziano De Rossi’s working career as a graphic designer. A few years later, right at the start of the ‘Digital Revolution’, Graziano started teaching and lecturing on the new subject to newcomers in various advertising studios around the city of Turin. Shifting to digital didn’t urge Graziano to shelve traditional art-drawing; on the contrary, he enthused at the new challenge and bonded the two seemingly conflicting methods of writing into one. His schooling on calligraphy began in Turin and later include stages at Padua and San Francisco, where his craft was honed to hi-level. Since 2014 his art-work began to appear open-air in shop-windows around Turin city center: Bookshops and Art Galleries were the first venues holding the privilege of Graziano’s ornate writing craft. Passers-by would stop strolling just to admire artist live performance, inducing some to get involved enough and become learners of the craft.

What is it about?

Getting free from the complexity of the model to land in a place where repeating simple strokes will lead to the right method. Learning the relationship between signs and rhythm is one of the goals of this workshop.

What will we work on?

From simple lines to more elaborated signs, our aim is to achieve the correct Italic style. The class shall learn this skill by mastering the gestuality which involves rhythm, the adequate speed and the proper pressure on the intended type of support (Paper, Cardboard, Glass, etc.).

How does it work?

Starting from the Italic style we shall deconstruct each letter in order to obtain the basic stroke: this will help us to learn how to draw them. Pens, brushes, ruling and brush pens will be our tools. The handling of the instruments will allow us to change the sign and achieve different expressive and aesthetic aspects. The first day most of the time will be spent following the learning path of every student. The second day we shall introduce the use of different tools to obtain a clearer notion of the gestures we just learned. We shall end the workshop by giving ample space to freely experimenting calligraphy on large rolls of paper, students and teacher together.
