Max Frischknecht
Graphic/Interaction Designer / Début Début
Max is a graphic and interaction designer working in St.Gallen and Basel, Switzerland. He attended at the Fachklasse für Grafik in St.Gallen and completed in 2009. Since then he worked as self-employed designer in various constellations. In 2016 he finished his BA in Visual Communication with a major in Interaction Design at the Hochschule für Gestaltung und Kunst Basel. In collaboration with Philipp Möckli he founded the Basel based design studio Début Début. During that time his focus shifted from classical graphic design towards interaction and creative coding. Currently he is developing a design research project on the topic of «Computational Propaganda» during his MA studies at the Hochschule der Künste Bern.
In a 3-day workshop we will collaboratively create a temporary editorial house and publish our very own open source handbook. In a first step we will create a comprehensive collection of useful references and important information on open source. The aim is to collect ideas and information around the topic of open source from various points of view, including technology, sociology, philosophy, design, art and more. Ranging from A like Arduino, over P as “Paragraphs on Computer Art Past and Present”, by Frieder Nake, to T like Tactical Media. The collection should also become a tool of SOS to both collect knowledge and serve as a lexicon of knowledge for future projects.
The aim is to create a open source tool that can be collaboratively reworked and constantly be extended. We want to create a dynamic design concept that structures the collected material and makes it accessible visually. To publish the handbook we want to experiment with web-to-print technologies (also called: remote publishing) and explore the role of graphic design within this field. If possible we would like to create and include an interface to print-on-demand services that allows everyone to publish his own customized handbook of open source.
During the workshop, we'll learn about open source and see the topic from new and surprising perspectives. We create a collaborative workflow to collect, structure and publish our content. We use graphic design as a tool to to make knowledge accessible. We explore and use technology to provide knowledge open source.
Output: a open source online publication tool and a small print run of the open source handbook.

NOTE: No prior knowledge needed to attend the workshop. There are different activities in the workshop you can get involved with based on your interest or experience. We would like to create a space where designers, programmers, editors and interested people from beginners to experts work together in collaboration. Please bring a collection of content you would like to include into the open source hand book. It will serve as a starting point for the workshop!
